Innovative Approaches to Combat Antibiotic Resistance: The Role of VHHs

Antibiotic resistance is a major concern and this is likely to increase in the future, both in and outside of the clinic. While new ‘conventional’ antibiotics are being developed to tackle this threat, VHHs can also be engineered into a novel type of antibiotic by targeting essential surface-exposed proteins present on toxic bacteria and other pathogens. Alternatively, they could serve as a stepping stone toward drug development, through medicinal chemistry.
