Most of the non-load shedding days were experienced over December when demand tanked.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">According to Jordaan, the tanking demand has continued into the new year. In fact, this is the most likely cause of the more \u2018optimistic\u2019 outlook for the energy situation in 2024, he said.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">\u201cA comparison of the first two weeks of 2024 and 2023 shows that both periods posted near identical plant availability (EAF) ratios. Only, in 2024, the blackout rate plummeted by two-thirds, thanks to an 8% drop in utility power demand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">Jordaan said that\u00a0<strong>if demand over the past three weeks had been on par with last year, the blackout rate would have averaged 33.4% \u2013 practically a stage 5-average in outages<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\"><a style=\"color: #777a7e;\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Demand-24w02.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"post-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-743509\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Demand-24w02-1024x412.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Demand-24w02-1024x412.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Demand-24w02-300x121.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Demand-24w02-768x309.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Demand-24w02.jpg 1269w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/figure>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\"><a style=\"color: #777a7e;\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/EAF-24w02.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"post-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-744325\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/EAF-24w02-1024x411.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/EAF-24w02-1024x411.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/EAF-24w02-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/EAF-24w02-768x308.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/EAF-24w02.jpg 1463w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"411\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/figure>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">Looking at the energy demand profile for the first two weeks of 2024, Jordaan noted that even though demand is picking up \u2013 as is the historical seasonal trend \u2013 it is still falling far short of what it was in the past, lagging the baseline by around 1,400MW.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">While the significant drop in demand appears to be a lifesaver for Eskom at the moment \u2013 sparing the country from worse levels of load shedding \u2013 such a significant shift doesn\u2019t come without its own problems.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">A permanent loss in user demand will also lead to\u00a0a\u00a0<strong>significant loss of revenue for Eskom through lost sales<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">Jordaan said that the data shows average demand destruction has escalated from 250MW per hour in September 2023 to 1500MW per hour over the past five weeks.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">\u201cWithout a further escalation, this near-permanent demand loss translates to 13 TWh, or\u00a0<strong>6.5%, of lost sales for Eskom in 2024<\/strong>,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">The rub is that Eskom is likely to push this loss onto consumers through future electricity price hikes, as the current methodology used allows for a \u2018clawback\u2019 on lost sales.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">While Eskom and Nersa are in the process of moving to a new methodology \u2013 with the latter proposing a system that gets rid of this \u2018clawback\u2019 clause\u2019 \u2013 this is still some way away from being implemented.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">In the meantime, in lieu of any significant improvements to EAF and increased generation capacity, energy users are likely to keep moving to alternative sources like solar and Independent Power Producers (IPPs), cutting demand even more.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #777a7e;\">Eskom set a target of hitting an EAF of 60% by March 2023 \u2013 a target it missed, hitting 60% only once around mid-October 2023.
